Can an American retro style phone (like the ones you see in the films) work in the uk?

In the UK we use a different system, even getting an adaptor to fit , it might not ring in, although you can probably phone out. If you really are "hell-bent" on having one , there is a device in Maplins that will alter the characteristics of a UK line to accept USA type phones.
