On a regular home phone (Panasonic). But I don%26#39;t want to have to call my phone company.

The best way is to get Privacy Manager put on your phone line. I would never go without it again. You won%26#39;t get any telemarketers, and if someone is calling you, you can block their number. It will only allow phone calls to go through if there is caller ID type information sent through, and if not, your phone won%26#39;t even ring. If someone calls on a calling card, they will have to identify themselves to even get it to ring on your end, unless you give them a password. I can even tell who is calling by the ringtone it makes. Its delightful! Its about $5 a month, but the peace of mind it gives you is worth it. yes phone up your provider ie. BT and ask them to do it Not sure where you are located, but in Canada/US try * 60 or dial 1160. then follow the prompts. Its called "call screen" and will divert unwanted callers with an announcement saying you are not available to take calls.
Your phone wont ring. you can divert up to 12 numbers at one time ..You can update/remove the numbers at later time. If you are in the UK go to the BT website www.bt.co.uk/phone book for instructions. BTW, some service providers may charge you for this service.best option is take advantage of service packages for several services like call display/ waiting/forwarding etc etc... works out cheaper than single options.. good luck :) hope this helps. PS i use to live in UK this option is available but cannot recall how to do it.
