We own a small business, and recently being able to fax documents has become an important missing link. Is it possible to have a fax machine if you use a computer line phone service as Vonage ?? If so, how would one go about it ? Serious question, serious answers please. Thanks
Answers:
Yes you can use fax with vonage, but due to the issue of synchronization of an analog signal over VoIP, you have to drop the speed on the fax machine down to 4800 bps. Depending on the connection (the particular fax call, not the broadband provider), you may be able to bring it up higher. I have had Vonage for 3 years and have never been able to fax higher than 9600 bps.
The fax speed is a setting you should be able to modify from the settings menu. Both receive and send are affected. If you use a standard land phone plugged into a jack for your phone service (regardless if a telephone company or Vonage or a cable company is providing you with the telephone signal), then you can plug a fax machine into the same phone jack and use it just like normal.
A phone jack + signal (and of course, an electrical plug) is all the fax machine needs to get going. If the fax machine cannot receive, then signal is not loud enough, fax will need to be closer to where your modem is physically located.
If you want the fax machine to have its own jack, then you will have to hook a phone cord from the Vonage modem to your phone demarcation jack in your location. This will allow you to use all the phone jacks in your building same as when you had the telephone company service (with any limitations in calling as specified by Vonage).
Source: former internal telecom installer yes fax works over vonage, and many other VoIP services... to those of you with Skype, or a softphone then you can not fax over the service...
it is a simple hook up... just connect the line cord between the vonage phone adapter and the "line" to the fax machine, then if you wish, connect the phone from the "phone" on the fax machine to your phone... the same way you would if it were a regular POTS line..
