Can I get an Internet phone to use for my apartment intercom?

I%26#39;m moving to a condo and there%26#39;s an intercom, but I need a local number to use it. Can I use Skype or something similar? I don%26#39;t want to get a landline if I don%26#39;t have to.

Answers:

no...I have the same problem in my condo in Miami.sooner or later they have to come up with something, because lots of ppl now have VoIP, SIP etc. we have been told by the condo board, it just cost to much money to convert now! live with it!!

we already have house alarm systems changing to VoIP, why not condo intercoms? NO.. the doorbell intercom system is located in the basement, or utility room of the building, right next to the telephone terminal...

while this is technically possible, the riser cable that goes from the telephone terminal to your apartment is owned and maintained by Verizon (or what ever the RBOC is in your area) and would require 2 pairs of the riser to work, 1 pair to send your dial tone downstairs to the doorbell system, and another pair to bring your dial tone with the doorbell system back up to your apartment.. No because the apartments have a room with all of the telephone systems from all the apartments tied in to the intercom. Voip goes from your cable/dsl modem directly to your home phone. So it%26#39;s impossible. Apartments take for ever to update. Because it%26#39;s possible.
