We are trying to get a local phone service and an internet connection at our new home, and we have been impressed at how expensive local phone service costs these days. We are going to be using a limited cell phone plan, so we want to be able to use our home phone for most of our phone calls.
If we were to sign up for one of those $0.00 phone plans that only works for calling cards and toll free numbers (I%26#39;m looking at Verizon%26#39;s "Away From Home Basic"), could we still use that to connect to DSL? Would there be an extra charge for that?
Because if were to do that, we could then sign up for vonage, and we would end up saving some money and being able to make unlimited calls.
Can we do this? Does anyone know? Does anyone have any better ideas? Thanks!!

go cable modem.. it is faster.. and there is no scheming involved... you want the faster bandwidth if you plan on using the connection for VoIP any how...
I am a phone tech... heres a little sample between DSL and Cable modem...
I installed DSL for one of our customers and did a speakeasy.net speed test... they got 700+Kbs download and 120+Kbs upload.
I have Cable at home, and i get 20,000+Kbs download and 5,000+Kbs upload...
so there is a BIG diffrence between cable vs DSL... and DSL just cant handle the bandwidth requirements for todays technology... I had planned to get Vonage, but at one point the people I lived with vetoed it.
We signed up for Verizon DSL. Less than $20 a month. That%26#39;s it. You don%26#39;t have to get a phone plan with them. Then sign up for Vonage for I think, $25 a month? Can%26#39;t you use Vonage for all of your calls? Or I%26#39;d suggest upping your cell phone plan, maybe getting a family plan, and use them for all of your calls. It really is a lot cheaper than land line phones. SMART man!
AT%26T wanted to charge me a premium rate for DSL since I didn%26#39;t want a calling package. See if Verizon does the same thing, though I doubt it. They are a much better company.
