From everything that I have found, with the technology available today (especially to the government), there is no sure fire way for you to find out if your phone is tapped. The theories with the foil and everything else are by no means accurate - same as if you have a brief moment of your phone ringing odd or hearing a clicking sound. Short of saying something incriminating and seeing if someone shows up at your door, I don%26#39;t know what to tell you. However, I am not recommending that you do that if you don%26#39;t want to do a lot of explaining! lol You could do some basic physical checks. Search online. don%26#39;t kid yourself, in today%26#39;s technology its so good, you will never notice it!! and don%26#39;t waste your money buying any kind of gadgets!
Clicks and static are indications of the phone lines proximity to a electrical source. Echo is generated from a signal bounce back off a bridge tap, all three together suggest that there is a location in the outside cable, probably near construction or a distribution box where a bridge tap is shorting or in contact of a improperly grounded power source.
Call the phone company and ask for a line check...
