I have not had regular telephone service in years. I want to connect my home security system to a monitoring service. I can%26#39;t justify paying the $40/mth just for the use of the monitoring svc. Has anyone used a straight (not VOIP, vonage, etc) internet connection for alarm monitoring?
Answers:
Many alarm panel mfg%26#39;s have internet transmission modules. DSC, Ademco and now Paradox have modules which can accomodate your needs. There are also several universal versions which can connect to almost any alarm panel on the market.
The disadvantage of IP transmission is your reliance on AC Power. Unless your Router and modem have a battery back-up, you are SOL in the case of a power failure.
Another available option is Cellular, GSM, or long range radio transmission. DSC and Ademco have their own versions and there are also universal versions out there, I use uplink for telco back up with my customers. I have a security system for my house w/o a home phone. It uses are satelite system from our TV. We go through Apex. If something goes wrong they call my cell #. yes, many home alarm services have changed to VoIP now!

http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic474-20... I do not understand why connecting your home alarm to your internet network would not work. the technology is available for this.. and it has got to be able to provide more info faster to the alarm company, such as perhaps video feeds...
check with the alarm companies in your area.. I would suggest trying to find an alarm supply house, where the alarm tech get there supplies from.. they would be able to give you an idea who is installing that type of system in your area..
a system like this would tie into all the home automation that is starting to come out... and you would be able to access and monitor your home from any internet connection when you were away... so if you cant find what you are looking for, get in touch with me, and we will invent it together.. =)
